Sextet in E-flat Major for Two Horns and String Quartet, Opus 81b
LudwigVan Beethoven, 1770 – 1827
Listeners should be aware of the high opus number of this piece, which suggests that it is a product of Beethoven’s maturity. In fact, Beethoven wrote the Sextet in E-flat Major about 1794-95, when he was in his early twenties, but he did not publish this youthful effort right away. The manuscript sat on his shelf for a number of years, and when he finally got around to publishing it in 1810, it appeared with the misleadlingly-high opus number 81b. That makes the Sextet seem contemporaneous with his incidental music to Egmont, when it actually dates from the years of his first two piano concertos. The Sextet is one of Beethoven’s least-known compositions, and its discovery will come as an agreeable surprise to many listeners. (Excerpt from the concert notes written by Eric Bromberger.)
